iPhone 17 Models Achieve Record Sales in Q1 2026

The recent sales figures for Apple's iPhone lineup have unveiled a remarkable trend. The current iPhone 17 models, which include the base model, the iPhone Air, and the Pro versions, have achieved a calendar Q1 sales record. This year, the premium models are not only gaining traction but also showcasing a significant increase in market share relative to their predecessors. Let's delve into the details of this impressive shift in consumer preferences and what it means for Apple's strategy moving forward.

The Evolution of iPhone Choices

When the first iPhone was launched in June 2007, consumers had a straightforward decision to make: to buy an iPhone or not. It wasn't until 2013 that Apple introduced a choice between models with the iPhone 5s and the more affordable iPhone 5c.
Notably, the iPhone 5s was the first model to feature Touch ID, a feature absent in the lower-priced 5c. Fast forward to last year, and buyers had an exciting range of four options following the September reveal: the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. This year, Apple's lineup expanded further with the introduction of the iPhone 17e in March.

Impressive Performance of Premium Models

According to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), in the March quarter of 2026, the premium-priced iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max collectively accounted for half of all U.S. iPhone sales. This marks a significant increase from the previous year, where the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max held 38% of the market during the same period.
Furthermore, the base model—iPhone 17—contributed 23% to iPhone revenue from January to March 2026, a slight rise from the 20% of sales attributed to the base iPhone 16 the prior year.

Challenges in the Middle Model Segment

Despite the overall positive trend, Apple continues to struggle with sales of the middle-model offerings. Since the launch of the iPhone 12 mini in 2020, no model has effectively bridged the gap between the base and Pro lines. Although Apple reintroduced the iPhone Plus name from 2022 to 2024, it failed to resonate with consumers, and last year's iPhone Air did not fare any better.

Sales Figures Reveal Trends

In the first quarter of 2026, the iPhone Air accounted for just 5% of U.S. sales, which is a decline from the 9% generated by the iPhone 16 Plus it replaced. The higher price of the iPhone Air compared to its predecessor could explain this disappointing performance.

Record Sales for Current Models

Despite the challenges faced by some models, the current lineup has set a record by capturing 82% of all U.S. iPhone sales in the March quarter—an unprecedented achievement for this time of year. The breakdown of sales for this quarter is as follows:
  • iPhone 17 - 23%
  • iPhone Air - 5%
  • iPhone 17 Pro - 24%
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max - 26%
  • iPhone 17e - 4%
