However, a recent study from Opensignal has revealed an unexpected twist: Xfinity, the cable giant that ventured into the wireless market only a few years ago, has emerged as the surprising winner. This article explores the findings from the nationwide tests conducted between January 1 and March 31, 2026, showcasing how Xfinity has managed to outpace the traditional telecom titans.
The Unlikely Champion: Xfinity's Success
Opensignal's latest research indicates that users of Xfinity Mobile enjoy a more reliable network experience and superior download speeds compared to those on major carriers like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Spectrum. Despite serving a relatively modest 7.5 million mobile subscribers—especially when compared to Verizon and T-Mobile’s collective base of over 140 million—Xfinity’s integration of mobile and home internet services is proving beneficial for users.
Xfinity’s Attractive Plans
Xfinity Mobile offers competitive plans, starting at $0 a month for the first year for subscribers who are also Xfinity Internet users. After the promotional period, users can enjoy unlimited data for just $30 a month, which significantly appeals to existing Comcast customers.
Understanding Xfinity's Edge
Interestingly, Xfinity operates as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), utilizing Verizon’s infrastructure. It might be assumed that Verizon's customers would benefit from better performance; however, the Opensignal report suggests otherwise. Although Verizon boasts a strong fiber network, its fixed-wireless access (FWA) service reportedly contributes to diminished consistency and speed, allowing Xfinity to take the lead.
AT&T's Upload Speed Dominance
While Xfinity stood out in download speeds, AT&T excelled in upload speeds, achieving rates 61 Mbps higher than its competitors, despite ranking lower in download speeds by nearly 16 Mbps. AT&T Fiber emerged as a clear victor in both upload and download speed categories, highlighting a significant split between its fiber and FWA offerings.
T-Mobile's Struggles in the Current Landscape
Conversely, T-Mobile finds itself lagging, primarily due to its FWA service, which has underperformed compared to other offerings.
