For a long time, electric vehicles were primarily seen as eco-friendly or economical choices. However, Opel aims to shift this perception with the introduction of the new Corsa GSE. This compact model is recognized as a "hot hatch"—lightweight and incredibly swift—demonstrating that thrilling driving experiences don’t have to come from loud, gas-guzzling engines.
The Corsa GSE stands out for its speed, outpacing nearly all other small electric cars available. Equipped with a single electric motor delivering 276 horsepower (207 kW), it accelerates from zero to 62 mph in an impressive 5.5 seconds when in Sport mode. This performance surpasses competitors in its category, including the Alpine A290, which reaches that speed in 6.4 seconds, and the electric Mini Cooper JCW, which takes 5.9 seconds.
As part of the Stellantis group, Opel benefits from shared technology with brands like Peugeot. The Corsa GSE utilizes the same motor and battery as the Peugeot e-208 GTI, yet Opel's engineers have enhanced its capabilities, allowing it to achieve a 0-100 km/h time of just 5.5 seconds—faster than both the Peugeot’s 5.7 seconds and the larger Mokka GSE, which, at 3,417 lb, carries an additional 104 lb and is subsequently slightly slower.
Performance is not solely about speed; handling and braking are equally critical. To this end, Opel has fitted the Corsa GSE with a limited-slip differential for improved cornering grip, lower stiffer springs for better stability, and enhanced performance brakes equipped with four-pot calipers. Opel claims that steering and pedal responsiveness are significantly improved compared to the standard Corsa electric models.
The vehicle’s design is striking, featuring 18-inch alloy wheels in a three-spoke configuration fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires (215/40 R18). These wheels pay homage to the iconic Corsa GSE from four decades ago, reflective of Opel's intent to celebrate its automotive heritage.
Aesthetically, the Corsa GSE is distinguished by a black roof and a rear spoiler, along with more aggressive bumpers compared to the standard Corsa. Inside, the 1980s-inspired theme carries on with plaid-patterned bucket seats, Alcantara detailing, bright yellow accents, aluminum pedals, and a digital display showing G-forces during maneuvers.
Similarly to its competitors, the Corsa GSE is equipped with a 51 kWh battery. While the exact range has yet to be confirmed, estimates suggest it will cover around 217 miles on a single charge, comparable to its Peugeot counterpart. Although adequate for city commuting and daily use, long road trips may necessitate more frequent charging stops compared to larger electric vehicles.
Volkswagen is developing a rival, the ID. Polo GTI, which will offer a longer range of approximately 260 miles but with reduced power at 223 horsepower (166 kW). Consequently, the Corsa GSE currently retains its advantage in performance. Opel appears to prioritize speed and enjoyment over sheer range, a compromise that driving enthusiasts may welcome.
The Corsa GSE modernizes the classic concept of a fun hatchback. It combines speed, an appealing aesthetic, and the technology to satisfy contemporary drivers. As more manufacturers enter the market with small electric performance cars, competition is bound to intensify. As it stands, Opel has established a formidable benchmark for others to aspire to.
