Pixel Phones Experience Drastic Battery Drain After Recent Updates

Despite their compact battery capacities, Google Pixel smartphones have traditionally relied on software optimization and efficient hardware to deliver solid battery life. However, recent updates have reportedly led to significant battery drain, raising concerns among users. Following the March Feature Drop, a growing number of Pixel owners have voiced their frustrations over excessive battery consumption, prompting discussions in various online forums.

Battery Drainage: A Growing Concern

After installing the March update, many users have noted a marked decline in battery performance. A survey I conducted on my experience with the Pixel 10 received over 1,600 votes, with the majority highlighting excessive battery drain as their main issue.

Further Deterioration After April Update

The situation worsened with the April software update, as some users reported not only decreased battery life but also performance lags. Although the complaints appear to affect a broad range of devices, reports on platforms like Reddit and the Google Community indicate that the battery issues are particularly alarming. One user noted that their Pixel 9 Pro lost nearly 10% of its battery charge overnight while in Airplane mode, while others mentioned substantial drops in battery life across various Pixel models, from the Pixel 6 to the latest Pixel 10.

Causes Behind the Battery Drain

As of now, Google has not issued an official statement regarding the source of these battery problems. However, a user on Reddit suggested that a bug introduced in the March update prevents the CPU from entering a low-power suspended state, keeping the device in a constant idle state, even when Airplane mode is activated.

Urgent Need for Resolution

Having owned the Pixel 10 for nearly six months, it has become evident that updates can be a gamble—introducing great features at times, but also causing basic functionalities like battery life and performance to decline. The upside is that Google has acknowledged the battery drain issue, placing it on their priority list for an upcoming fix in the May update. Alongside this, there's potential for addressing other issues such as the bootloop problem in the next software release.
