iPhone 18 Display Downgrade Revealed: Key Insights from New Report

Source: Date:

Recent rumors suggest that the standard iPhone 18 may undergo some downgrades, particularly concerning its display. A new report has shed light on this topic, indicating that Apple is likely to economize by utilizing a less advanced screen technology.

The standard model is expected to feature Samsung's M12+ material, which offers only minor improvements over the M12 material found in the iPhone 14 Pro and Galaxy S23 Ultra.

iPhone 18's display downgrade detailed in new report

In contrast, both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will implement the M16 material, which succeeds the M14 first seen in the iPhone 16 Pro and utilized across the entire iPhone 17 lineup.

If these reports hold true, the standard iPhone 18 will likely feature a display that is inferior to its predecessor. Newer display technologies provide improved luminous efficiency, meaning better power consumption for a given brightness level. Consequently, if the iPhone 18 indeed adopts the M12+ technology, it may counteract the efficiency benefits typically provided by the A20 chip, which is produced using a 2nm process.

It's yet to be determined how this display change will affect everyday use, especially regarding whether the iPhone 18 will offer less battery life than the iPhone 17. However, this could potentially be offset by incorporating a slightly larger battery. As the iPhone 18 is expected to launch next spring, we can anticipate more updates in the coming weeks and months, so stay tuned for further developments.
