Google Wallet Introduces Live Flight Tracking: A Game Changer for Travelers

Google Wallet has taken a significant step forward in enhancing travel convenience with its latest update, which allows users to track real-time flight status directly from the app. This feature, which integrates seamlessly with existing functionalities, is set to make travel more efficient and may even lead some users to consider uninstalling their favorite airline applications.

A Feature in the Making

Initially hinted at during the I/O 2025 conference, Google’s Live Update capability was promised to roll out across various travel-oriented apps, including Google Maps, Uber Eats, and Waymo. However, the spotlight soon fell on Google Wallet, where the enhancement promises significant utility for travelers.

This addition was mentioned in the release notes of Google Play services v25.42, though a specific launch timeline was not provided. Fortunately, users on devices operating Android 16 or the Android 17 beta can now access this highly anticipated feature.

Once you’ve added your boarding pass to Google Wallet, comprehensive flight status information will be available on your lock screen. A persistent notification and progress bar will provide real-time details about your flight.

Users will see essential data, such as estimated time of arrival (ETA) and travel locations, shortly after takeoff. This information will also appear on the Always-On Display if enabled. Tapping the progress bar will direct users to the ticket page, complete with a link to Google Flights for additional details.

Integrated Features for a Hassle-Free Experience

The Live Update feature in Google Wallet is designed to work alongside the app’s existing functionalities. It enhances the ability to scan Gmail for upcoming flights and sends reminders for check-in time. Additionally, users benefit from timely notifications regarding boarding time changes and can access a QR code for smooth boarding at the gate.

Comparative Features with Apple Wallet

It’s worth noting that this flight tracking feature is not exclusive to Google Wallet; Apple Wallet users have been able to track flights similarly. Apple Wallet even allows users to share boarding pass Live Activities, enabling friends or family to stay informed about flight statuses from afar.

Moreover, Google Wallet's Live Update capability can also be utilized for tracking train journeys, offering versatility that further reduces the need for separate transportation apps. If you haven’t yet experienced this feature, ensure your Google Wallet app is updated to the latest version through the Google Play Store, along with Google Play services.
