BMW is transforming the development of its flagship sedan, the 2027 BMW 7-Series, which serves as a precursor to the design and functionality of all forthcoming BMW electric vehicles. While the car incorporates some components from previous models, it is equipped with the advanced technology found in the "Neue Klasse" lineup. This results in a vehicle that is smarter, lighter, and features a multitude of screens that could rival your home entertainment system.
The exterior of the new 7-Series maintains a recognizable silhouette. The iconic front grille has been redesigned to be wider and shorter than its predecessor, featuring a distinctive glow. The main headlights are cleverly integrated into the bumper, while the updated daytime running lights are positioned higher. BMW has introduced more body-colored plastic on the front, and the two-tone paint option visible in the photos takes an impressive 75 hours to complete, though it may not appeal to everyone. At the rear, the taillights have been elongated, and the car boasts a new matte logo.
Inside the cabin, innovative features abound. BMW has introduced a "Panoramic Vision" system that projects essential information across the base of the windshield. A substantial 17.9-inch screen takes center stage, and, for the first time, front passengers have access to a personal 14.6-inch screen for gaming or movie watching. To enhance safety, a camera monitors the driver’s gaze; if the driver looks at the passenger's screen, it dims to prevent distractions.
Rear passengers continue to enjoy the impressive 31.3-inch Theater Screen. This 8K display now functions like a tablet, thanks to new touch controls. It is equipped with a camera for Zoom calls and includes an HDMI port for laptop connectivity. For an extra fee, a premium Bowers and Wilkins sound system with 36 speakers and 1,925 watts of power is available; even the standard version offers 18 speakers and 575 watts.
The electric variants of the 7-Series receive a significant power upgrade. BMW has implemented new cylindrical battery cells that store 20 percent more energy than earlier models. The usable battery capacity is now 112.5 kWh, and all i7 models are now compatible with the NACS charging port, similar to that used by Tesla. These vehicles can charge at a rapid 250 kW rate, allowing the battery to recharge from 10 percent to 80 percent in approximately 28 minutes.
The i7 60 xDrive stands out as a high-performance electric option, delivering 536 hp (400 kW) and a range of over 563 km on a single charge. It accelerates from 0 to 97 km/h in just 4.6 seconds, with a starting price of €107,770. For those seeking a more economical choice, the i7 50 xDrive offers 449 hp (335 kW) for €91,980 and achieves 97 km/h in 5.3 seconds. Gasoline enthusiasts can opt for the 740 models, featuring a 394 hp (294 kW) six-cylinder engine, starting at €86,510.
The pinnacle of performance in the lineup is the i7 M70 xDrive, which boasts 680 horsepower and can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, despite its considerable size. This model has an impressive range of 686 km and can charge at the maximum rate of 250 kW.
Additionally, the vehicle's weight has been reduced thanks to a new "zonal" wiring system, which eliminates about 610 m of cumbersome cables, resulting in a 30 percent reduction in wiring weight. The car also features a new voice assistant powered by Amazon's Alexa, allowing drivers to interact naturally with the vehicle for tasks such as adjusting the climate controls or managing smart home devices.
BMW has also enhanced its safety technology with a feature called "Symbiotic Drive." This system monitors the driver's gaze, assisting with lane-keeping only if it detects unintentional drifting. Moreover, it can detect animals on the road and automatically halt the vehicle. Notably, BMW has decided against pursuing fully autonomous driving capabilities, opting instead to focus on safety and ensuring that human drivers remain alert.
Production of the new 7-Series will commence in July 2026 in Germany, with electric i7 and gas-powered 740 models launching in Europe first, followed by the United States shortly thereafter. A plug-in hybrid variant, the 750e xDrive, will debut in early 2027, featuring 483 hp (360 kW), alongside a more powerful V8 model.
