Apple Poised to Challenge Huawei's Dominance in China's Smartphone Market in Early 2026

Source: Date:

In a remarkable turn of events, Apple has made significant strides in the global smartphone arena, notably emerging as a leader in the first quarter of 2026. This shift not only highlights Apple's impressive global performance but also raises pivotal questions about Huawei’s standing in its home market of China. As both companies compete fiercely, the dynamics of consumer preferences and pricing strategies will play a crucial role in determining the future landscape of the Chinese smartphone industry.

Apple's Rising Trajectory

According to Counterpoint Research, Apple captured an impressive 21 percent share of the global smartphone market in Q1 2026, continuing its momentum from a strong finish in 2025. Apple’s success was particularly notable in the Chinese market, where its performance severely challenged Huawei's longstanding dominance, which remained unchanged from 2025.

Huawei's Market Position Under Threat

In the first quarter of 2026, Huawei managed to maintain its position as the top smartphone vendor in China with a slight year-on-year growth to 13.9 million units sold. This increase, while commendable, pales in comparison to Apple's explosive growth from 9.2 million units in Q1 2025 to 13.1 million units in Q1 2026—an astonishing 42 percent increase amid an overall market contraction.

Apple’s impressive sales in China can be attributed to its relatively stable pricing strategy, avoiding the broad price increases that have affected its competitors like Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor. This advantage positions Apple well to potentially overtake Huawei in the near future.

Impact on the Chinese Smartphone Market

Apple's significant increase in sales helped stabilize the Chinese smartphone market, which saw an overall decline of 1 percent in Q1 2026. Without Apple’s remarkable performance, the downturn could have been much worse. This trend illustrates consumers' inclination towards established brands, with the combined market share of the leading vendors—Huawei, Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Honor—accounting for a staggering 94 percent, leaving little room for newer or smaller brands.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, analysts predict a further decline in Chinese smartphone sales by 10 percent for the rest of 2026, largely due to rising memory chip prices. This trend could compel Apple to increase its prices as well. Despite this uncertainty, many believe Apple is on a course to secure the top position in China and globally by the end of 2026, particularly if new products, such as the anticipated iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, resonate with consumers in the upcoming months.
