Google Photos Introduces Long-Awaited Playback Speed Feature and New AI Enhancements

Google Photos continues to evolve, adding features that users have been requesting for years. Among these is the highly anticipated playback speed adjustment for videos, which arrives alongside new AI-driven editing tools. This article delves into the new features and how users can make the most of them.

A Sought-After Feature

Google maintains a community forum allowing users to report bugs and suggest features. A significant request emerged regarding the ability to adjust video playback speed in Google Photos. Many users expressed their desire for this capability, resulting in nearly 200 upvotes on the suggestion.

It's Finally Here

Earlier this year, rumors surfaced about Google testing playback speed adjustments for videos in the Google Photos app. After months of waiting, this feature has finally rolled out in the stable version. Google acknowledged the demand for this feature in a blog update, stating it has been a long-standing request from its community.

How to Adjust Video Speed in Google Photos

To use the new playback speed option, make sure your Google Photos app is updated. Here’s how to adjust the video speed:

  1. Open the app and select the video you wish to play.
  2. Tap the three-dot icon in the top-right corner and select Playback speed.
  3. Choose your desired playback speed from the options (0.25x, 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, and 2x).

After adjusting the speed, note that the next time you play the video, it will revert to the default speed of 1x.

While Late to the Feature

Although Google Photos is catching up with features that have long been present in alternatives like VLC Media Player and community-led apps such as Fossify Gallery, its introduction of playback speed adjustments is welcomed. YouTube, the gold standard for video functionality, has offered this feature for years, but it’s great to see Google Photos finally joining the party.

Introducing AI Enhancements

In addition to the playback speed, Google Photos has unveiled a new AI Enhance button. This feature aims to improve your photos' quality with just one tap, balancing light and color in an instant. Users can find this button at the bottom-center of their images in the app, making it easier than ever to enhance photos. However, Google warns that results may vary depending on the device.

While the AI Enhance feature is rolled out for all Android users globally, some may not see it available immediately. Users are encouraged to check back regularly to access these exciting new options.
