AT&T's Strategic Growth Outpaces T-Mobile's 5G Aspirations

Source: Date:
In the competitive landscape of telecommunications, AT&T has set its sights on a solid foundation for future growth, emphasizing fiber internet over T-Mobile's aggressive push for 5G expansion. Despite T-Mobile leading the market in subscriber count, a closer examination reveals that AT&T's strategic decisions may position it to reclaim market leadership in the years ahead.

Smart Strategic Moves

While T-Mobile concentrates on expanding its 5G internet offerings, AT&T focuses on broadening its fiber network capabilities. Analysts from Seeking Alpha project that AT&T could surpass T-Mobile in market performance by 2026, based on their recent quarterly results.
AT&T has bolstered its position by adding over 1 million fiber customers for the eighth consecutive year, alongside 875,000 new subscribers for AT&T Internet Air. Their fiber revenue exhibited a significant year-over-year growth of 17%, reaching $8.6 billion. With fiber services now accessible to 32 million households and businesses, AT&T has a robust advantage compared to T-Mobile, which aims to reach 15 million 5G broadband customers by 2030 and plans to add 3 to 4 million fiber customers during the same timeframe. Meanwhile, AT&T expects to expand its fiber reach to 60 million locations by the end of 2030, having already surpassed critical milestones in fiber deployment.

Market Perspective

AT&T's winning strategy lies in focusing on fiber, which presents greater potential for future revenue growth compared to wireless. This aligns with the industry's evolution into a more integrated connectivity ecosystem.
John Stankey, AT&T's Chairman and CEO, stated, "With new investments in spectrum and fiber, we’re set to win more customers in more categories and geographies across the U.S."

Building on Fiber Strength

While T-Mobile is relatively new to the fiber sector, its growth relies heavily on mergers and acquisitions. In contrast, AT&T and Verizon are expanding their fiber networks through organic growth, successfully providing both wireline and wireless services across numerous U.S. locations. T-Mobile's strategy emphasizes Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), utilizing excess 5G capacity to provide broadband service. However, the limitations of FWA deployment impact its broader application, while AT&T’s dedicated fiber strategy positions it to cater to users with higher demands across a wider area.

Challenges for T-Mobile

While T-Mobile is experiencing success with its 5G offerings, it currently trails behind AT&T and Verizon, both of which boast larger broadband customer bases. The ability to provide both cellular and internet services is key to reducing customer churn, a strategy all major players are adopting.
T-Mobile ended 2025 with 142.4 million subscribers, slightly behind Verizon at 146.9 million, while AT&T holds 120.1 million subscribers. Despite its challenges, T-Mobile remains competitive but must adapt quickly to sustain its position in an evolving market.
