Google Maps Revamps Its Look on Android and iOS with a Modern Icon
Google Maps, a long-standing favorite in navigation apps and a pioneer on the mobile scene since its debut on the first iPhone, has undergone a significant visual transformation. As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance user experience, Google has unveiled a fresh new icon for its Maps application on both Android and iOS devices. The updated icon maintains the recognizable "pin" symbol but boasts a more contemporary design that reflects Google's vibrant aesthetic.
A Modern Take on the Google Maps Icon
One of the most striking changes is the introduction of a gradient that seamlessly blends Google's signature colors into the "pin" design. Unlike the previous icon, which featured separate color blocks, the new icon presents a more cohesive and smooth color transition. Additionally, the "pin" has been enlarged, and the inner circle is now more prominent, resulting in a thinner top ring for a sleeker appearance.
Reflecting on the history of the Google Maps icon, it initially featured intersecting lines that represented roads, complemented by a red pin and highway signage. The app evolved, adopting various designs over the years, including a folded map aesthetic with colored blocks and a lowercase "G." The new icon is distinctly modern, aligning with current design trends while maintaining brand recognition.

How to Get the New Icon on Your Device
The new Google Maps icon is available in version 26.09.06.873668274 for Android users and version 26.09.5 for iOS users. If you haven't seen the new icon yet, it might be time to check for updates on your device. Here’s how:
- For Android: Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, go to "Manage apps & device," and check for updates. Scroll to find Google Maps and tap "Update" if available.
Updating my Pixel 6 Pro resulted in the new icon appearing instantly after downloading the update. For iPhone users, the following steps can help:
- For iOS: Open the App Store, tap your profile icon, navigate to "Updates," and find Google Maps. If an update is available, hit "Update."
In my case, I had to refresh the update page before the new version appeared for my iPhone 15 Pro Max, but once updated, it successfully displayed the new icon. Now, both my primary and backup devices feature the updated design.
Reflecting on Google Maps' Journey
As a reminder of its evolution, I fondly recall using the Google Maps app as far back as 2007 on my iPhone and experiencing its advance into turn-by-turn navigation on the Motorola Droid in 2009. It was a game-changer, making navigation seamless long before Apple introduced that feature on the iPhone. Interestingly, Google and Apple had negotiations in the past regarding user data and integration, which led to significant changes in how Google Maps was utilized on Apple devices.
