Apple has unveiled the new Apple TV 4K (4th gen) at its latest smart home event, and it brings impressive upgrades alongside a hefty price tag. This new streaming device, equipped with the A19 chipset, promises enhanced performance and features, making it a notable addition to the Apple lineup despite its sticker shock.
The new Apple TV 4K comes in at a staggering price point, nearly doubling the launch cost of its predecessor, the 3rd gen model from 2022. The starting price for the 128GB model with Ethernet is set at $300, presenting a significant jump from the $130 launch price of the 64GB 3rd gen model.
However, the advancements in technology make the price more understandable. The 4th gen model is powered by the Apple A19 chipset — the same chip found in the iPhone 17. This upgrade results in a 50% faster CPU and a GPU that is two times faster than the A15 chip in the previous generation. Additionally, the built-in AV1 decoder makes it adept for modern streaming services.
The 4th gen Apple TV is not just about better streaming; it also supports gaming via Apple Arcade and workouts through Apple Fitness+. With Continuity Camera, you can even use your iPhone as a webcam for video calls, while it doubles as a photo display by pulling images from your iCloud.
The redesigned Apple TV remote features the familiar layout but now includes Find My support with Precision Finding, making it easier to locate when misplaced.
For those interested in sound, you can pair up to four smart speakers, including HomePod mini 2 and HomePod (2nd gen), for an enhanced audio experience. The device also supports AirPods (with Spatial Audio) for personalized movie watching without disturbing others. It boasts Dolby Atmos for audio and supports a variety of video formats, including Dolby Vision and HDR.
Incorporating smart home capabilities, the new Apple TV allows for seamless control of your home through Wi-Fi and Thread connectivity. It can display live views from compatible doorbell cameras and allows you to interact with visitors directly through your television screen.
One of the standout features is the integration of Apple Intelligence with Siri AI. This allows for enhanced security camera functionality, generating descriptions and notifications by processing feeds directly on the device. The A19 chip includes Secure Enclaves for privacy, enabling on-device processing in conjunction with Apple’s Private Cloud Compute.
Equipped with three far-field microphones, users can activate Siri across the room to control playback and other smart home devices with the “Hey, Siri” command.
The Apple TV 4K (4th gen) is currently available for pre-order at Apple.com, but note that it won’t be available for shipment until November 13. Its advanced features and capabilities certainly provide value; however, potential buyers may want to weigh the costs against their needs.
