SpaceX Moves Closer to Launching Starlink Mobile Service with New Spectrum Acquisition

Source: Date:

In a significant development for the telecommunications industry, SpaceX, the aerospace company led by Elon Musk, has acquired up to 14MHz of paired spectrum in the 800MHz band across the United States. This acquisition from Grain Management is deemed by Musk as "the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle needed for SpaceX to provide complete phone coverage in America." The ambitious goal is to leverage Starlink satellites for outdoor mobile coverage while utilizing the 800MHz spectrum to enhance indoor connectivity.

Existing smartphones are compatible with this frequency band, allowing for a seamless integration into the market. Starlink Mobile plans to complement its existing global 2GHz mid-band spectrum for robust outdoor coverage with ground-based femtocells tailored for 5G accessibility.

Pending regulatory approval for this recent acquisition, SpaceX aims to implement a versatile architecture that melds its "satellite-to-mobile constellation in space with an advanced terrestrial deployment," facilitating connectivity for devices regardless of location.

Once fully operational, Starlink Mobile is poised to compete directly with established players such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, particularly excelling in outdoor coverage for rural and underserved regions. SpaceX has already garnered approval from the FCC to launch 15,000 next-generation satellites to support this ambitious endeavor.

The 800MHz spectrum purchased by SpaceX previously belonged to T-Mobile, which divested it to Grain Management in August as part of a larger transaction involving the exchange of spectrum licenses and a cash payment of $2.9 billion.
