In a strategic move reflecting the rising demand for high-performance hardware, Samsung has announced plans to outsource its DRAM manufacturing. This decision comes as the company seeks to concentrate its efforts on the production of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), positioning itself at the forefront of the burgeoning AI industry.
The escalating competition in artificial intelligence has significantly increased the need for advanced memory solutions. Recognizing this trend, Samsung is pivoting towards HBM production, which has proven to be its most lucrative segment in recent years.
Insider sources reveal that Samsung is currently engaged in discussions with its partners, focusing on expediting the completion of DDR5 production lines. The intent is to invest in outsourced production capabilities that will allow Samsung to allocate more resources to HBM chip manufacturing.
Despite the potential benefits, there are concerns about how this transition may impact the already tight DDR5 memory market. With existing supply constraints, PC builders, server operators, and laptop buyers might face even greater challenges during this period.
To facilitate this transition, Samsung has been negotiating with several production partners, including Dreamtech in India, Hanyang Digitech in Vietnam, and SFA Semicon in the Philippines.
