Samsung Galaxy S27 Lineup: Potential Use of LPDDR5X for Lower-Tier Models

Recent leaks regarding the Samsung Galaxy S27 lineup have stirred discussions among tech enthusiasts, especially concerning its memory specifications. Initial expectations pointed towards the integration of LPDDR6 memory alongside Qualcomm's forthcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. However, emerging rumors paint a different picture, suggesting that Samsung may opt for LPDDR5X memory in its lower-tier models.

Citing sources from The Bell, reports indicate that Samsung is conducting quality evaluations of Micron's advanced LPDDR5X memory, manufactured using the 1y process, which is comparable to the 1c DRAM production technique from competitors Samsung and SK Hynix. In light of escalating RAM costs, Micron appears to be charging 50% more than Samsung's own Device Solutions division, which typically offers its chips at a 20-30% premium compared to older memory generations.

This scenario suggests that even if Samsung chooses Micron's LPDDR5X memory for its standard Galaxy S27 and Plus models, the company will incur additional expenses relative to previous memory iterations.

On the other hand, there remains a possibility that the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra will feature the latest LPDDR6 chips, paired with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Meanwhile, the base Galaxy S27 and its Plus counterpart are predicted to utilize Micron’s LPDDR5X memory and might be powered by Samsung's homegrown Exynos 2700 SoC, manufactured on the company's second-generation 2nm process technology.
