Is Volkswagen's New EV Concept a Game-Changer or Just a Late Arrival?

Volkswagen, once a leader in automotive engineering, is attempting to reclaim its status with the introduction of a striking new electric vehicle concept called the Mission Efficiency. Can this innovative design and cutting-edge technology signal a renaissance for the brand or is it simply an example of innovation coming too late to the market?

Volkswagen XL1 Concept

Back in 2013, within an environment that glorified clean diesel, Ferdinand Piëch unveiled the Volkswagen XL1 – a carbon-fiber vehicle with scissor doors, powered by a two-cylinder turbodiesel engine that consumed less fuel than a scooter, all in exchange for a staggering price of €110,000. Fast forward thirteen years, following a scandal and drastic shifts within the company, Volkswagen has resurrected that spirit with the Mission Efficiency, an all-electric model that stands as a sleek four-seat tourer, albeit one that may not resonate with a market that never exactly beckoned for it.

Mission Efficiency Prototype in Action

The Mission Efficiency prototype recently took on a remarkable 1,278.36 km journey from Wolfsburg to Vienna, managing to charge only once during the trip. The car showcased impressive efficiency, averaging 6.89 kWh/100 km at the cells and arriving with a reserve of 164 km still available on the dashboard. While cynics might question the slow average speed of 67.72 km/h and the hypermiling strategies, the underlying efficiency numbers are commendable. Maintaining a steady speed of 68 km/h with no climate control drew just 6.48 kWh/100 km, akin to running three hairdryers for an hour.

Aerodynamic Design Features

What sets the Mission Efficiency apart is its aerodynamics. It achieves a remarkable drag coefficient of just 0.158, a world record for road-legal passenger vehicles, thanks to its teardrop shape, limited frontal area of just 2.08 m², and innovative design features like active radiator flaps and fully covered rear wheels. This aerodynamic prowess allows it to use 30% less energy than a standard ID. Polo at high speeds, minimizing energy demands.

The Dimensions of Mission Efficiency

The Mission Efficiency measures 4,975 mm in length and stands 1,350 mm tall, positioning itself relative to other competitors like the Mercedes Vision EQXX and the ill-fated Lightyear 0. Instead of crafting a completely bespoke platform, VW opted for its existing, widely-used MEB+ architecture, incorporating a standard electric motor with 99 kW (135 horsepower) and a usable battery pack of 54.9 kWh.

Notably, the concept also sports tailored new tires developed in collaboration with Continental, aligning their rolling resistance standards with the forefront of energy efficiency. A solar panel on the roof and rear tailgate adds further efficiency but only supports the vehicle’s auxiliary systems, accumulating up to 30 km of range in optimal conditions.

Minimalist Interior of Mission Efficiency

The Mission Efficiency's interior sticks to a minimalist aesthetic, shunning elaborate displays for a simplified "Bring Your Own Device" approach for navigation, and limited rear passenger space due to its design constraints. Despite its spartan look, it boasts a generous cargo capacity of 481 l, a significant advantage compared to other eco-focused designs.

Challenges Faced by Volkswagen

However, whilst the mission's technical achievements are admirable, they are overshadowed by the uncomfortable reality facing Volkswagen—namely factory closures, job losses, declining sales, and increased competition from aggressive Chinese brands like BYD threatening its market dominance. Early ID-branded vehicles also left a negative impression, with complaints about build quality and software issues lingering among consumers.

Looking back, it’s perplexing how Volkswagen missed the mark for over a decade. Instead of pivoting towards aerodynamic efficiency in its EV strategy, the company remained preoccupied with the fallout from the diesel crisis while launching bulky electric SUVs that consumed vast battery resources to counteract their own unrefined shapes. The revelation that proper design can reduce weight and energy needs seems painfully overdue.

As it stands, there's skepticism regarding whether the Mission Efficiency will ever make it to market. VW’s brand chief, Thomas Schäfer, suggests it represents "technology for the masses," yet, history suggests otherwise. If it does reach showrooms, projections lean towards a high market price, potentially over €150,000, relegating it to a niche product rather than the accessible vehicle it aspires to be.

This presents a bittersweet predicament—while the Mission Efficiency highlights Volkswagen's engineering prowess, it also stands as a ghostly reminder of what the brand once achieved when free from excess constraints. Unless Volkswagen can break from its current defensive financial posture to build this car for the average consumer, the Mission Efficiency will simply remain an echo of innovation—frozen in time and missed opportunities.
