In a significant move to bolster user security, WhatsApp has unveiled a series of enhanced features designed to protect users from potential threats and improve the overall calling experience. With privacy concerns at an all-time high, WhatsApp aims to provide its users with more robust verification methods and caller information, ensuring a safer messaging environment.
The first major improvement is the upgrade to its two-step verification process. Previously relying solely on a six-digit PIN, WhatsApp is now instituting a more rigorous security measure that involves a full alphanumeric password with special characters. This move is intended to make unauthorized access more challenging and enhance the overall security of user accounts.
In addition to enhancing account security, WhatsApp is also improving call security. Users will now receive additional information when receiving calls from unknown numbers, such as the geographical origin of the caller’s number and any shared group memberships. This new feature, aimed at reducing scam phone calls, is currently available exclusively for Android users.
Furthermore, WhatsApp is encouraging users to implement passkeys for logging back into their accounts. This method allows users to access their accounts using biometric verification, including fingerprints or facial recognition, instead of traditional codes or PINs. With over a billion users reportedly activating this feature, the addition of multiple passkeys offers increased flexibility, especially for those who may use both Android and iOS devices. Users can easily add or manage their passkeys by navigating to Settings > Account > Passkeys.
