Introduction: In a landmark move set to revolutionize its 5G capabilities, AT&T has finalized a $23 billion acquisition of spectrum licenses from EchoStar. This strategic investment is expected to significantly enhance AT&T's capacity and speed, further solidifying its position in the competitive telecom market.
AT&T has announced that it has successfully completed its acquisition of $23 billion worth of spectrum licenses from EchoStar, a deal that was initially revealed in August of the previous year.
This substantial investment grants AT&T access to an average of approximately 50MHz of both low-band and mid-band spectrum, covering nearly every market in the United States, which includes over 400 regions. Specifically, the acquisition includes 30MHz of 3.45GHz mid-band spectrum and 20MHz of 600MHz low-band spectrum.
This strategic move is poised to significantly enhance AT&T's 5G capacity and download speeds. According to the official press release, it will also enable the company to "deliver an AI-ready connected experience" by optimizing the spectrum to improve the uplink capabilities of its wireless network.
Furthermore, AT&T anticipates that this acquisition will enable it to "accelerate and expand" the availability of its Internet Air service, which provides home internet access through the company's wireless network. This transition will allow AT&T to move more customers away from obsolete copper-based phone and internet services, both in areas targeted for future AT&T Fiber deployment and in others where such plans may not exist.
