In 2023, Tecno unveiled its Universal Tone imaging technology, designed to represent all skin tones accurately. Following this, the company initiated the #ToneProud campaign in 2024 to combat skin tone bias in smartphone photography. Last year, Tecno expanded the Universal Tone multi-skin tone color card to include 372 skin tone patches, furthering its mission to create digital cameras that reflect the unique qualities of every individual.

Brazilian Visual Artist Angélica Dass Launches the '100 Portraits of Becoming' Initiative

Tecno has partnered with Brazilian visual artist Angélica Dass to introduce the '100 Portraits of Becoming' initiative, which will span two years and five countries, beginning on July 6 in Nairobi, Kenya. The inaugural photo shoot featured local entrepreneurs, creators, and innovators.

All portraits for this initiative will be taken using the Tecno Camon 50 Ultra, which incorporates the Universal Tone technology. The aim is to capture 100 individuals across five countries, with participants encouraged to wear their own clothing and be photographed in natural light without filters to ensure authenticity.

The portraits will be showcased on the initiative’s website. Alongside the images, Dass will document the personal stories of participants, detailing how they have navigated various cultural and societal shifts to become who they are today.

“My portrait practice has always focused on creating space for individuals to exist beyond assumptions. This collaboration excites me because it aligns with a shared vision, allowing identity to remain open, layered, and human, reinforcing that visibility does not equate to understanding. True recognition begins when we are seen as we genuinely are,” commented Angélica Dass.

“Through this project, we aim to transcend mere technical accuracy in representation and explore it as recognition, enabling technology to not only capture individuals faithfully but also to facilitate a deeper understanding. By moving past bias, labels, and stereotypes, we aspire to create a future where technology authentically reflects humanity, fostering true comprehension. Genuine representation is essential for authentic human connection,” added Jack Guo, General Manager at Tecno.
