Insider Reveals OxygenOS, Realme UI to Merge into ColorOS: What This Means for You

Source: Date:

In 2021, Pete Lau announced the upcoming merger of OxygenOS and ColorOS, indicating that OnePlus devices would no longer have a separate software lineage from Oppo. A reliable insider has now indicated that Realme UI will also be incorporated into ColorOS.

This merger will unify the three previously independent brands under a single software platform, ColorOS, streamlining research and development costs. This step is part of a broader consolidation strategy.

Notably, OnePlus Germany is actively directing users towards Oppo devices, and OnePlus UK is experiencing significant stock shortages. The insider claims that OnePlus will concentrate its efforts solely on the Indian and Chinese markets, leading to a winding down of its operations in other regions. In India, support services for OnePlus customers are already being managed by Oppo.

In parallel, Realme is shifting away from its domestic market in China to focus on international opportunities. While there have been rumors of a merger between OnePlus and Realme, it seems that the two brands will only overlap in India; elsewhere, their integration will have minimal impact.

The implications for the U.S. market, which is already limited in choices apart from Apple, Samsung, and Motorola, remain unclear. It is uncertain whether Oppo will withdraw from the U.S. entirely or attempt to promote its brand, which is largely forgotten in the region (historically known for its DVD and Blu-ray players). Furthermore, OnePlus has struggled to gain traction, capturing less than 1% market share in the U.S.
