Gaming-specific features in the core Android OS are relatively rare, but a recent revelation from ex-journalist and current Google employee Mishaal Rahman has unveiled an intriguing new feature slated for Android 17: Foldable Gaming Mode. This feature introduces a highly customizable virtual controller that appears on the lower half of your unfolded foldable device, while the game itself is played on the upper half.
Currently, the controller operates on a 50/50 split that cannot be adjusted, though future updates may provide more flexibility. This virtual joystick emulates system-level controller inputs, meaning any game with existing controller support should work seamlessly. The only prerequisite is that the game must be adaptive enough to scale down to half the display size.
The virtual gamepad encompasses standard controller inputs, including the D-pad, dual thumbsticks, A, B, X, Y buttons, L1, L2, L3, R1, R2, R3, and the Start button. While there is no split percentage adjustment at the moment, even in its pre-release state, the feature offers significant customization options. Users can choose a staggered control layout for enhanced ergonomics and adjust button sizes across three settings: Small, Medium, and Large. Additionally, the joystick supports dark mode, along with a toggle to enable or disable haptic feedback.
Google engineers have also prioritized a seamless experience for displaying and hiding the virtual gamepad, allowing users to do so on demand—whether during gameplay or beforehand. If the Android system detects a connected USB or Bluetooth physical gamepad, it will automatically hide the virtual pad.
This is a robust foundation for gaming on foldable devices, and the best part is that it will soon be integrated into AOSP. This integration enables all Android manufacturers to adapt and refine the feature to suit their specific foldable models.
