Rivian unveiled its more affordable R2 model in February and launched its configurator, but shipments have yet to begin. Notably absent from the configurator is the option to include LiDAR technology.
The company has clarified that the LiDAR system will not be part of the R2 during its initial production months. This decision aims to expedite the vehicle's release and generate essential revenue. Customers can expect the LiDAR system to be available in optional packages by "late 2026."
Recently, a Reddit user shared a spy shot that indicates we may see the LiDAR option appear in the R2's configurator sooner than anticipated. This implies that testing of the LiDAR system, which will facilitate advanced self-driving capabilities, is nearing completion.

Interestingly, the LiDAR hardware appears relatively discreet compared to other implementations. The traditional "taxi bump" has been substituted with a subtle indentation above the windshield, which many may find visually appealing compared to standard designs.
