WhatsApp is set to introduce usernames after years of testing and anticipation. Starting this week, users can reserve their usernames, although the actual roll-out will occur later this year in phases. WhatsApp will notify users when the feature becomes available in their region.
Given that WhatsApp has over three billion users, demand for specific usernames is expected to be high. The addition of usernames aims to address privacy concerns, as WhatsApp states that "a phone number is personal and tied to many aspects of your life" and that "sometimes you just want to chat without sharing your details".

This feature is particularly beneficial in group chats, where users might not want their phone numbers visible to strangers. To assist with username selection, WhatsApp will provide a built-in generator.
Once the username reservation feature is available, users can find it in WhatsApp’s Settings after tapping their profile photo. Additionally, users can claim a username that matches their existing Facebook or Instagram username.
When usernames are officially launched, there will be no directory or search functionality for them. Users must know the exact username to make initial contact. To combat spam, WhatsApp has implemented an optional username key that others will need to message you.
