iOS 27 Introduces Larger Widgets, Bringing Apple Closer to Android's Customization Capabilities

Source: Date:

Apple is making strides in widget customization with the upcoming release of iOS 27. Following its introduction of widgets in iOS 14, Apple is now ready to take a significant step forward by adding the ability to create larger, more informative widgets. This change aligns Apple's capabilities with those of Android, enhancing user experience on iPhone devices.

Historical Context: The Evolution of Widgets

Home screen widgets made their debut with iOS 14 in 2020, previously limited to a narrow "Today's View" section. In contrast, Android users were introduced to more adaptable widgets much earlier, starting with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. This version allowed users to resize widgets on their home screens, a feature that was not available on iPhones until now.

Introducing the 4x6 Widget Layout in iOS 27

With the recent introduction of the first developer beta of iOS 27, the updates have shown that larger 4x6 widgets will be supported in the stable release expected in September. This enhancement will enable users to display more information within a single widget, improving readability and overall user interaction.

An extra-large 4x6 widget can occupy half of a standard tablet-sized foldable screen, making it particularly beneficial for data-rich applications.

The Drawbacks of Rigid Widgets

While rigid widgets provide a clean layout, they come with limitations. Users who alter system font sizes or have different device aspect ratios may find their widgets clipped, resulting in text and UI elements being partially hidden. This clipping occurs when text exceeds the bounds of its container, or when UI components overflow the designated space.

Current Options for 4x6 Widgets

In the current developer beta for iOS 27, only a handful of Apple's first-party apps feature the new 4x6 layout. As the official release approaches, it is anticipated that more third-party developers will adapt their applications to include these larger widget options for users.

User Experience with iOS 27's Widgets

Apple's new 4x6 widgets will be easily placed on the home screen. Users can long-press smaller widgets and stretch them to the new dimensions, but they will not have the same flexibility as Android users to tailor widget sizes to their preferences. Future iOS updates may include this ability, but for now, users can enjoy the benefits of enlarged widgets.

How to Add Widgets to Your iPhone Home Screen

To explore available widgets on your iPhone, locate an empty area on your screen and long-press it to activate "jiggle mode." An icon resembling a paintbrush will appear in the top left corner; tapping it will reveal an option to "add widgets." Browse the latest widgets, select the one you wish to add, and press the blue "Add Widget" button. Even if it seems you lack space, the iPhone can rearrange other icons and widgets to accommodate your new widget.
