Apple Finally Decouples Alarm and Ringer Volumes in iOS 27

In a long-awaited update, Apple has announced a feature in iOS 27 that allows users to separate alarm and ringer volumes, a change that has been nearly two decades in the making. This new capability, introduced during Tim Cook's final major presentation as CEO at WWDC'26, is part of a series of enhancements aimed at improving the usability and functionality of the iOS ecosystem.

Enhancing the Alarm Experience

Until now, alarm volumes on iOS devices have been directly linked to system volume levels, meaning changes in one would affect the other. Users were often faced with the inconvenience of having to adjust their ringer volume after selecting a comfortable alarm volume, or vice versa. This limitation created a frustrating experience for billions of iOS users who seek personalized control over their device's audio settings.

A Long-Awaited Feature

With the release of iOS 27, Apple introduces a new option in the "Sound & Haptics" menu that lets users decouple alarm and ringer volumes. To access this feature, users can navigate to the "Alarms and triggers" section within the settings. By default, this feature will keep the ringer and alarm volumes synced, but users can toggle it off to set distinct volume levels for each.

Moreover, adjusting the alarm volume will not interfere with automatic wake-up alarms set by the Health app based on user-defined sleep schedules.

More Control Over Audio Settings

In addition to this significant change, users can now also separate alert and system sounds from ringer volume, further enhancing the level of customization available. However, it is important to note that users will need to access the settings menu to change volume levels, unlike Android devices that allow easier adjustments directly from the volume slider.

The Overall Benefits of iOS 27

This is just one of several improvements that make iOS 27 an impressive update. Along with a major redesign of Siri AI, this version focuses predominantly on user experience enhancements, resolving many existing issues and enhancing the overall functionality of the OS. iOS 27 is set to roll out to compatible iPhones this fall, with some of the more advanced features of Siri AI available only on the latest models.
