Two software engineers, M1Astra and Sam Henri Gold, have discovered indications of the iPhone Ultra within the iOS 27 beta source code. While the code does not explicitly mention "iPhone Ultra," there are significant hints towards a foldable smartphone.

The iOS 27 beta framework includes terms such as "foldState," "angleDegrees," "mechanicalAngleDegrees," and "isanglevalid," suggesting the software can detect the device's folded and unfolded states. Specifically, the "foldState" indicates iOS 27's ability to recognize the position of the iPhone Ultra, while the other strings imply it can assess how far the device has been opened.
Given these findings, it’s plausible that the iPhone Ultra may feature functionality akin to Android's Flex Mode, allowing users to partially close the device and utilize it in a "laptop" mode for viewing videos hands-free or typing on a larger keyboard while observing content on the other half of the screen.
According to Bloomberg's M1Astra, several features in iOS 27 are already available to the public but will perform significantly better on the Ultra. For instance, iOS 27 now supports full-screen widgets that occupy the entire display; on a foldable device, these widgets would only take up half the screen's area.
Moreover, the enhanced iPhone Mirroring feature enables users to project their iPhone's display onto a Mac, now in an iPad-sized window.
With numerous lines of code in iOS 27 hinting at the iPhone Ultra, it seems likely that Apple will unveil its long-anticipated foldable phone this fall, possibly alongside the iPhone 18 series.
