Apple is set to unveil iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 on June 8 during its Worldwide Developers Conference. According to a recent report from Bloomberg, these new operating systems will feature support for AI extensions.
These extensions will enable users to access generative AI capabilities from installed applications on demand, utilizing Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, and more.
Essentially, users will have the option to employ either Apple’s built-in tools or third-party alternatives. The extensions will be applicable for generating and editing text and images, along with facilitating conversations.
Moreover, each AI model utilized could feature a distinctive voice, ensuring that users can easily identify which model is interacting with them. The built-in Siri model will have one voice, while third-party models may have their own, though the extent of customization remains uncertain.
It is likely that third-party AI services will need to update their applications to align with this new extension system, but there is no doubt that they will seize this opportunity. Once integrated, users might choose to utilize Claude for writing assistance, Gemini for image creation, and ChatGPT for dialogue with Siri.
This strategy indicates that Apple has largely shifted away from developing its own AI platform to rival ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Instead, it appears to be embracing market competition through this new initiative.
