At Auto China 2026 in Beijing, Mercedes-Benz introduced the GLC L, its latest offering designed exclusively for the Chinese market. This long-wheelbase electric SUV enhances the popular GLC with technology inspired by the premium S-Class, addressing the growing competition from local luxury brands.
The design of the GLC L unites traditional elegance with cutting-edge innovations. The front features a shield-style grille that aligns with the brand's latest design language, symbolizing its longstanding heritage. This grille is adorned with 942 miniature lights capable of dynamic patterns, illuminating when the car is unlocked or charging. A radiant star logo takes center stage, while digital LED headlights can automatically adjust between high and low beams.

One of the standout features of this model is its size. Recognizing the Chinese preference for ample rear legroom, Mercedes-Benz has elongated the GLC L compared to its global counterpart. Measuring 4,949 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,710 mm in height, it boasts a 3,027 mm wheelbase—an increase of 55 mm relative to the standard variant, translating to more space for rear passengers.
Inside, a nearly glass-encased dashboard features the impressive MBUX super screen, which spans 39.1 inches, including a central 14.4-inch display and an additional 12.3-inch screen for the front passenger. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip, the screens offer a seamless experience, complemented by a new virtual assistant named "Xiao Ben," meaning "Little Benz."

Mercedes-Benz has equipped the GLC L with premium comfort features, including heated and cooled front seats with massage capabilities. The use of high-quality leather enhances the cabin, while a Burmester sound system delivers an exceptional audio experience. A large panoramic sunroof offers nine transparency settings, allowing for varied light exposure. Additionally, the vehicle includes a 128-liter front trunk, perfect for small items like bags or charging cables.
The GLC L's technological features are equally noteworthy. It operates on an 800V system, enabling rapid charging; drivers can add 260 km of range within 10 minutes. The vehicle is equipped with an 89 kWh battery, providing over 700 km of range on a single charge, according to Chinese testing standards. Its dual-motor setup generates 310 kW (approximately 416 horsepower) and offers 800 Nm of torque, ensuring swift acceleration for this substantial SUV.

This new electric model incorporates many components from the S-Class, including a standard air suspension system that adjusts the ride softness based on road conditions and can alter the vehicle's height. To enhance maneuverability, rear-axle steering allows the back wheels to turn as much as 4.5 degrees, enabling this elongated SUV to navigate tight city parking with the agility of a smaller car.
Mercedes-Benz launches GLC L amid a challenging backdrop in China, where it sells approximately 30,000 to 40,000 units monthly, yet faces increasing competition. Domestic brands are producing comparable luxury vehicles at lower prices. Despite a prior attempt with the smaller CLA L— which struggled to gain traction—Mercedes-Benz hopes that the GLC L's blend of S-Class luxury and enhanced space will entice customers to remain loyal to the three-pointed star brand. Only time will determine if "Little Benz" can help recapture market share.
