Leapmotor B05 Ultra: A Game-Changer in Affordable Electric Performance

At the Beijing Auto Show 2026, Leapmotor debuted the B05 Ultra, marking its entry into the affordable performance segment. This rapid electric hatchback aims to demonstrate that high-speed driving doesn't require a hefty price tag. In China, the model is known as the Lafa 5 Ultra, distinguishing itself from other 'Ultra' cars that often come with sky-high prices. The B05 Ultra takes a different approach by maintaining budget-friendliness.

The Ultra variant is easily recognizable thanks to its sporty side skirts and prominent roof wing that impart an aggressive appearance. The front bumper features large air intakes for improved cooling and aesthetics. It rides on sleek 19-inch wheels adorned with gray brake calipers, and even the badges are finished in gray for a stealthy vibe. Potential buyers can choose from three colors: yellow, green, or gray.

However, the Leapmotor B05 Ultra offers more than just an eye-catching design. It is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor generating 180 kW—approximately 241 horsepower and 255 Nm of torque. This power enables the 4.5-meter long hatchback to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds. While this performance may not compare to other high-end 'Ultra' models, it is relatively swift within its price range. However, expect a top speed limited to 170 km/h, suggesting that 'Ultra' emphasizes acceleration rather than maximum speed.

Fortunately, Leapmotor's engineering team concentrated on enhancing the car's cornering capabilities. The B05 Ultra boasts a perfect 50:50 weight distribution between the front and rear axles. This equilibrium, paired with a stiff suspension, allows the car to remain flat and stable during sharp turns. Weighing in at 1,665 kg, it is relatively lightweight for a modern electric vehicle. Its dimensions are 4,490 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width, and 1,510 mm in height.

In terms of battery options, buyers can choose between two variants, both utilizing Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology. The base model features a smaller 56.2 kWh battery pack, enabling a range of 500 km on a single charge. For those seeking greater distance, the higher trim level is equipped with a 67.1 kWh battery, extending the range to 600 km. Note that these range figures are based on the Chinese testing cycle and may be lower in real-world conditions, particularly if the B05 Ultra is driven aggressively.

Inside, the cabin exudes a surprisingly high-end feel, featuring nearly everything covered in black faux-suede—about 4.48 square meters in total. The front seats prioritize comfort, with ventilation and an 8-point massage function, a rare luxury in this price range. Additionally, a heated steering wheel offers wintertime comfort, showcasing the company's intent to create a premium interior atmosphere.

Technologically, the B05 Ultra is impressive, incorporating a LiDAR-based driving system. This laser technology helps the car navigate the road and detect other vehicles, assisting with steering and featuring autonomous parking capabilities that allow it to find and park in a spot while the driver observes.

Pricing is one of the most compelling aspects of the B05 Ultra. The base model starts at RMB 123,800 (approximately €15,480), and Leapmotor is offering a limited-time discount that reduces the price to RMB 118,800 (around €14,900). The top-tier model with the larger battery retails for RMB 129,800 (€16,231), or €15,600 with the discount. Compared to the standard B05, priced between €12,230 and €15,230, the Ultra provides significantly more speed for a modest increase in cost.

Leapmotor aims to boost its sales figures with this new offering. The standard B05 has already attracted 5,960 buyers in China, and the Ultra models began arriving at dealerships in early April, with deliveries expected soon. Importantly, this model is set to be introduced in Europe through Stellantis. While it may not carry such an affordable price tag—given that the standard model starts below €27,000—we anticipate a competitively priced electric hot hatch around €30,000, which will be great news for prospective buyers.
