The Beijing Auto Show revealed a significant development in electric vehicles with the debut of the XPeng GX, the newest flagship SUV from Chinese automaker XPeng. Priced at RMB 399,800 (approximately €49,500), this SUV is packed with premium features typically found in much more expensive electric vehicles. XPeng aims to showcase that its offerings can compete with high-end European luxury brands.
At first glance, the XPeng GX’s design may remind you of a Range Rover, thanks to its boxy and strong aesthetic favored by luxury car enthusiasts. Measuring 5,265 mm in length and featuring a spacious wheelbase of 3,115 mm, the GX maintains a remarkably low drag coefficient of 0.255, outperforming many smaller cars. It also rides on impressive 22-inch wheels that contribute to its upscale appearance.

Inside, the XPeng GX focuses on spaciousness and comfort. Unlike many three-row SUVs that compromise backseat space, the GX employs a layout featuring two seats per row. The soft-close doors ensure a quiet and luxury feel, affirming XPeng's commitment to family comfort with ample trunk space capable of accommodating six large suitcases. Additionally, there is a silent fridge to keep drinks cold, and the front passenger seat can recline fully for relaxation. The cabin also incorporates AI technology to provide dimming capabilities for privacy.
Two variants of the GX are available: a fully electric model equipped with an 800V system allowing ultra-fast charging, termed '5C supercharging,' with a range of 750 km. This model also includes dual electric motors to ensure all-wheel drive and excellent traction on the road.
The second variant is a hybrid model able to travel 430 km on battery alone, supplemented by a gas engine acting as a generator to extend the total range to 1,585 km, making it a versatile choice for long journeys. All-wheel drive comes standard on both versions.
XPeng promotes the GX as its first "robotaxi-ready" vehicle, featuring four advanced AI chips developed by the company. These chips provide high-speed processing capabilities for autonomous driving, complemented by a steer-by-wire system co-engineered with Bosch, eliminating the need for traditional mechanical linkages.

Safety is a cornerstone of XPeng's design philosophy, as indicated by the company's claim of “aviation-grade” safety features. The GX incorporates multiple backup systems for critical functions such as steering and braking. In emergencies, it can autonomously stop if a collision is imminent, even at speeds up to 150 km/h, a significant advantage particularly in adverse weather conditions such as ice and snow.
Despite XPeng's previous attempt to penetrate the luxury market with the G9, competitive challenges remain, particularly against popular Chinese models like the Li Auto L9 and NIO ES8. While the pricing of €49,500 offers substantial features and value, some industry observers consider it relatively high for the Chinese market.
For an additional investment, consumers can opt for the exclusive “Kunlun Cloud Realm” paint, which is applied in 15 meticulous layers, granting the GX a handcrafted appearance with a depth and luster typically associated with luxury vehicles exceeding €170,000. XPeng is committed to establishing the GX as a premier luxury product.
Transitioning from a car manufacturer to an AI mobility provider, XPeng is venturing into robotics and eVTOL aircraft, positioning the GX as a pivotal element of its future strategy. Should the self-driving technology meet expectations, the premium price may be justified, enticing consumers with the promise of automated driving conveniences. The GX is now arriving in stores across China.
