The Beijing Auto Show never fails to impress, and this year, XPeng has introduced its latest flagship SUV, the XPeng GX. Priced at RMB 399,800 (approximately $58,000), this vehicle aims to showcase the company’s commitment to luxury and technology. With advanced features typically found in higher-end electric vehicles, the XPeng GX is designed to compete with renowned luxury brands.

At first glance, the XPeng GX displays a boxy and robust appearance reminiscent of a Range Rover, but it actually surpasses the British classic in size, measuring 207.3 inches in length and boasting a wheelbase of 122.6 inches. Despite its large dimensions, the GX achieves an impressive drag coefficient of 0.255, outpacing many smaller cars. Its 22-inch wheels contribute to its commanding presence.

Inside, the XPeng GX redefines space. Unlike many three-row SUVs that feel cramped in the rear, this model features a comfortable layout with two seats in each of its three rows. The soft-closing doors ensure a peaceful entry and exit, perfect for families. The trunk can accommodate up to six large suitcases even when fully occupied, while an integrated fridge keeps beverages cool. The front passenger seat can recline a full 180 degrees, offering a cozy spot for short rests. For added privacy, smart glass technology can dim the windows as needed.

Two versions of the GX are available: a fully electric variant with an 800V system that supports rapid 5C supercharging, capable of traveling 466 miles on a single charge, and a hybrid model that offers 267 miles on electric power alone. When combined with the gas engine, the total range extends to a staggering 985 miles, enabling extensive travel without frequent refueling or recharging. Both models come equipped with all-wheel drive as standard.

XPeng labels the GX as its first "robotaxi-ready" vehicle, outfitted with advanced AI capabilities thanks to four specially designed chips. Collaborating with Bosch, the vehicle employs a steer-by-wire system that enhances steering precision and responsiveness, eliminating the need for mechanical linkages between the steering wheel and wheels.

Safety is paramount in the XPeng GX, which boasts "aviation-grade" safety standards featuring multiple backup systems for critical functions, akin to those used in commercial aircraft. The vehicle can autonomously stop when detecting potential collisions, functioning effectively even at speeds up to 93 mph and on challenging surfaces like ice and snow.

This is not XPeng's first attempt at entering the luxury market; they previously introduced the G9, which did not achieve significant success. Now, the GX competes against other popular Chinese models such as the Li Auto L9 and NIO ES8. While a vehicle with these specifications would typically be celebrated globally, some experts believe its pricing may be high in the competitive Chinese market.

For a premium, customers can opt for a striking paint finish called "Kunlun Cloud Realm," applied in 15 meticulous layers that grant the GX an artistic, lustrous appearance often associated with cars costing over $200,000. XPeng is committed to delivering a genuinely luxurious experience embedded in every detail of the SUV.

Transitioning from a traditional car manufacturer to an AI mobility leader, XPeng is also exploring robotics, eVTOL development, and autonomous taxi services. The introduction of the XPeng GX is a significant step in this ambitious direction. If the self-driving technology meets its promises, the investment may well be justified, potentially attracting buyers looking for relief from the mundane aspects of driving. The GX is already making its way to dealerships across China.
