In a surprising turn of events, Netflix subscribers in Italy are poised to receive significant refunds due to a ruling from an Italian court. While Netflix has recently increased its prices in the United States, the company is now facing the consequences of prior pricing strategies in Italy that were deemed illegal.
Italian Court Rules Against Netflix's Price Hikes
Between 2017 and 2024, Netflix implemented a series of price increases that affected millions of Italian subscribers. These changes were challenged by Movimento Consumatori, an independent consumer advocacy group, which argued that Netflix failed to provide justifications for the hikes as mandated by Italy's Consumer Code. As a result, the court declared the price increases illegal.
Following this ruling, those subscribed to Netflix's premium service could receive refunds of up to €500 ($576 USD), while standard plan subscribers may receive up to €250 ($288 USD). Additionally, the court has ordered Netflix to roll back its prices to their former rates.

As a result of the court's decision, the premium service's monthly rate will decrease from the proposed €19.99 ($23.03 USD) back to €11.99 ($13.81 USD), while the standard plan's price returns to €9.99 ($11.51 USD) from the planned increase to €13.99 ($16.12 USD).
Netflix Faces Pressure to Comply
Netflix is required to inform both current and former subscribers in Italy about the price rollback and refund process within 90 days. Notifications can be sent through various means including traditional mail, email, national newspapers, and the Netflix website. If Netflix fails to comply, they risk incurring fines of €700 ($806.44 USD) per day, with Movimento Consumatori threatening further legal action if immediate compliance isn't observed.
While Netflix maintains that it operates within the law and is appealing the decision, U.S. subscribers have recently faced their own price increases. The company raised its standard service fee from $7.99 to $8.99 per month and increased ad-free standard and premium plans, citing a substantial $20 billion content budget for 2026 as a reason for the adjustments.
Netflix's Evolution Over Time
Netflix began its journey as a DVD rental service before transitioning into streaming. The app launched on various devices, paving the way for modern streaming with today’s seamless 5G connections. This transformation marks a significant shift from earlier experiences with slower 3G speeds, which often resulted in buffering and visual quality issues.
Recently, Netflix made headlines with its attempt to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery for a staggering $83 billion, in a bid to secure popular franchises like Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. However, the deal was ultimately outbid by Paramount Skydance, though Netflix did receive a $2.8 billion termination fee from Warner Bros. Discovery as a result of the failed acquisition.
