SK hynix Unveils Revolutionary 1c LPDDR6 RAM: Enhanced Speed and Efficiency

Source: Date:

SK hynix has announced the upcoming mass production of its LPDDR6 memory, built on the innovative 1c (10nm-class) DRAM process, set to begin in the second half of this year. The company has successfully completed validation of the 1c dies and is now preparing for mass production during the first half of the year.

The new 16 gigabit LPDDR6 chips will be utilized in smartphones and tablets equipped with on-device AI. These chips are designed to facilitate bandwidth-intensive AI applications, offering a 33% increase in data processing speed compared to the previous LPDDR5X standard. The base operating speed for this advanced RAM is 10.7Gbps.

Furthermore, LPDDR6 boasts at least a 20% improvement in power efficiency over its predecessor. This enhancement is achieved through two innovative techniques that adjust performance according to demand: a sub-channel structure and Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS).

The sub-channel structure permits certain data paths to enter a dormant state when additional bandwidth is unnecessary. Conversely, DVFS effectively lowers the operating frequency (and voltage) during lighter loads, while automatically ramping it up to meet the demands of resource-intensive tasks, such as AI processing and gaming.

According to SK hynix, the introduction of its 1c LPDDR6 RAM will significantly extend battery life and improve multitasking capabilities on future devices.
