Hyundai Kona Unveils Bold New Design: A Shift to Third Generation

Car enthusiasts initially anticipated a minor facelift for the Hyundai Kona, a common practice among automakers to refresh a model's appearance midway through its lifecycle. However, recent sightings in South Korea indicate that Hyundai is abandoning this approach. Instead of a slight update, the company is developing an entirely new version of the beloved SUV.

A recently spotted test vehicle was seen on South Korean roads, cloaked in heavy camouflage to conceal its design. Notably, it bore the code: SX3. In automotive terminology, this code signifies that it represents the third generation of the model, rather than a mere update of the existing version.

This development is surprising, given that the second-generation Kona only launched in 2023. By advancing directly to a third generation, Hyundai is moving at an unprecedented pace. The blurry photos of the prototype suggest some intriguing design decisions. The new vehicle bears a strong resemblance to the Crater Concept, which premiered at the LA Auto Show, showcasing a rugged, off-road electric SUV designed for adventure.

If the new Kona follows the aesthetic of the Crater Concept, it will appear taller and more technologically advanced. We expect to see dense "pixel" lights along with an elongated LED light bar stretching across the front, a feature becoming synonymous with Hyundai's design language. However, the modifications won't be limited to the exterior. Inside, the new Kona is likely to introduce a completely new PLEO infotainment system, characterized by a large screen that functions similarly to a smartphone.

While official specifications are still awaited, we can infer what to expect by examining current models. The existing Kona boasts a range of approximately 418 km, and the new version is likely to strive for improved performance. When it comes to dimensions, the current Kona measures around 4,340 mm in length; the new model may see a slight increase in size, providing passengers with additional legroom and a larger trunk space.

By opting against a simple update, Hyundai is making a significant gamble. The aim is to ensure that the Kona remains competitive with popular models from brands like Kia and Tesla. Testing is still in its early phases, so the design may evolve before it reaches showrooms.

Although there is no official release date yet, the presence of test vehicles on public roads suggests a reveal may occur within the next year, possibly by early 2027. Drivers who appreciate innovative technology and rugged design should keep a close watch on this upcoming model.
