Speed Showdown: Testing the Fastest Electric Vehicles on the Market

Source: Date:

Electric vehicles (EVs) are known for their efficiency, quiet operation, and advanced technology. However, the thrill of instant torque and powerful performance is equally captivating. A team in China set out to determine which mass-market EV is the fastest, putting the top 10 models against each other to see which could reach 62 mph the quickest. They also conducted brake tests to ensure thorough evaluation.

Since the tests were conducted in China, some of the cars are less familiar to international audiences. The contenders for the drag race included: Neo ET7, XPeng P7 (known in China as P7i), Arcfox Alpha S, Tesla Model 3 Performance, Porsche Taycan Turbo, Audi RS e-tron GT, Tesla Model S Plaid, Zeekr 001 FR, Lotus Eletre R+, and the latest Zeekr 007. Before the tests, all vehicles were charged to 80%, and tire pressures were set according to manufacturer specifications.

The ambient air temperature was approximately 32°F, which had no impact on the comparisons since all vehicles experienced the same conditions. Each car was equipped with measuring devices to ensure accurate results.

Here is a summary of the participants, detailing their power outputs and claimed 0-62 mph times as provided by manufacturers:

VehiclePowerClaimed 0-62 mph time
Zeekr 001 FR930 kW2.02 s
Tesla Model S Plaid760 kW2.1 s
Zeekr 007468 kW2.84 s
Lotus Eletre R+675 kW2.95 s
Porsche Taycan Turbo500 kW3.2 s

Tesla Model 3 Performance377 kW3.3 s
ArcFox Alpha S487 kW3.5 s
Nio ET7480 kW3.8 s
XPeng P7348 kW3.9 s

During the actual tests, the Zeekr 001 FR demonstrated a significantly greater advantage over the Tesla Model S Plaid than the official figures indicated, although neither reached their advertised acceleration times.

The Zeekr 007 finished in third place, just two tenths behind the Model S, while the Lotus Eletre R+ followed closely behind.

The Audi RS e-tron GT was one of only two vehicles to achieve its claimed acceleration time, despite the chilly conditions, outperforming the Porsche Taycan Turbo, which had better performance on paper. The Model 3 Performance, which promised comparable acceleration, fell behind by four tenths.

Along with the Audi, the Nio ET7 delivered its promised 0-62 mph time, securing eighth place, just ahead of the Arcfox Alpha S. The Nio increased its lead over the tenth-placed XPeng P7 from one tenth to six tenths during the actual run.

The braking test for the Tesla Model S Plaid took an unfortunate turn. Equipped with a Track Package featuring ceramic brakes, the car experienced a malfunction, locking all four brakes and forcing the driver off course. Thankfully, there were no accidents, but the tires suffered severe damage.
