Top 5 Smartphones of 2025: A Personal Selection

Source: Date:

This list may seem oddly motivated, but hear me out. Identifying five smartphones to genuinely appreciate in 2025 - especially in our industry - is no small feat. For instance, Ro only managed to include four devices, as did Sagar, while Ivan's selection features three distinct yet rather similar foldables. Therefore, what I've compiled is a 'Top 5' that is not entirely my own; it includes one personal favorite, a couple based on feedback, and two that are present merely out of tradition.

Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold

Personally, I have no need for a foldable phone. Having experimented with clamshell designs and phones that convert into tablets, neither approach fits my lifestyle. My smartphone primarily serves for scrolling through news feeds and instant messaging, while I desire state-of-the-art camera capabilities, if not for photography itself, then for the assurance that they're available when necessary. Unfortunately, neither design caters to that requirement effectively.

However, just because I prefer handling shopping or planning trips on a PC and watching movies on a traditional TV doesn't mean everyone shares my habits. The Galaxy Z TriFold functions seamlessly as a phone and transforms into a tablet—a larger and more appropriately proportioned device compared to its competitors—when extra screen space is required. Additionally, it offers better protection for its flexible display during periods of inactivity than the other tri-fold model, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate.

Yes, the Z TriFold is exceedingly expensive, and its cameras would be considered mediocre at best on any conventional midrange phone, let alone one priced around €3,000. Yet, it all comes down to priorities. While the features addressed by the Z TriFold may not resonate with me, I still appreciate its effort to advance the foldable concept.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro and Google Pixel 10 Pro

I’m combining these two devices because, in my opinion, they are essentially the same product viewed through different operating system lenses. Each year, I find myself wanting at least one, often both, but practicality usually steers me away.

There exists an indescribable feeling of uniqueness when using either Apple’s or Google’s hardware and software, a sensation that remains true with their latest smartphones. The glass feels different, the displays shine brighter, animations are smoother, and haptic feedback is more refined—these details add to the overall experience.

Moreover, these manufacturers are the only ones that seem to integrate Qi2 magnetic attachment compatibility into their devices, a feature I am particularly interested in despite the growing concern regarding its practicality in my specific use cases.

However, it’s worth noting that neither model excites me in terms of camera capabilities, which are essential to me. Features like magnets and an abstract sense of superiority can only carry a device so far.

vivo X300

My partner has been searching for a replacement for her Pixel 7 Pro, with her unique preferences and requirements in mind. To her credit, she patiently waited for the perfect option, passing on several models that didn’t meet all her needs.

Enter the vivo X300. This model is compact, unlike the bulky Pixel, which had to change. It boasts impressive rear cameras—modern models that surpass those found on the Pixel—and a capable selfie camera that outperforms its predecessor. Additionally, it has a sizable battery (depending on the version; she was fortunate to obtain a non-EU unit)—the Pixel, in contrast, relied heavily on wall charging. Thus, it scored a perfect four out of four. She loves it, and if that's not reason enough for a phone to make it to my top five, I don’t know what is.

Oppo Find X9 Pro

Finally, we arrive at my absolute favorite phone of the year, the Oppo Find X9 Pro. By now, you may have guessed my preferences, and the Find X9 Pro is as close to ideal as it gets: a top-tier cameraphone equipped with a large battery, and, as luck would have it, it includes a first-party case with a Qi2-compliant metal ring inside. What else could I ask for?

Now, I understand that Ultra-level cameraphones elevate photographic performance even further. However, these models have primarily remained exclusive to China, including those from vivo and Oppo. I will believe in the existence of a global Find X9 Ultra or a vivo X300 Ultra when I have one in hand. To be fair, Xiaomi has offered more reliable international launches, but logistical challenges have prevented me from obtaining the 15 Ultra after spending a year with its predecessor, making me content with the alternatives from vivo and Oppo.

A recent tri-phone camera comparison we conducted addressed several personal queries, with the Oppo outperforming the vivo X300 Pro based on my established priorities. Additionally, it offers superior battery performance compared to the vivo X300 Pro in its EU version—sure, I am rarely away from a power source, but better autonomy is always appreciated during rare occasions when I do need it. Briefly, we considered becoming a vivo-only family, but I found that my Oppo serves itself better than the X300 Pro can in its context.

You may notice that my list lacks exuberance, instead leaning toward practicality. The scope of upgrades appears to have plateaued, or if major advancements occur in one area, they often come with trade-offs in others. My enthusiasm for phones has diminished somewhat, at least for the time being. Let's hope for a change with the upcoming Ultra lineup.
