Qualcomm's Potential Return to Samsung for 2nm Chip Manufacturing

Source: Date:

Qualcomm's CEO, Cristiano Amon, has revealed that the company is in discussions with Samsung regarding the production of its 2nm chips, although Samsung has not commented publicly on the topic.

This development is notably intriguing, especially given the challenges faced by Samsung's foundry division. The last collaboration between Samsung and Qualcomm on chip production occurred in 2022 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which faced significant criticism due to thermal issues. Additionally, Samsung's foundry failed to meet Qualcomm's yield requirements, prompting Qualcomm to turn to TSMC for its manufacturing needs.

Currently, Qualcomm has initiated dialogue with Samsung to potentially take over the production of its 2nm chips. Reports indicate that Qualcomm has completed the chip design and is prepared to begin manufacturing.

While no agreements have been finalized, it appears Samsung is making efforts to revive its foundry business. The head of Samsung's chip division is under pressure to restore profitability, and recent supply agreements with several customers, including a notable deal with Tesla for AI chip production, hint at a positive shift in circumstances.

It remains uncertain whether Samsung will be responsible for manufacturing the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips or if there are other plans in the works for their collaboration.
