Qualcomm in Talks with Samsung for Potential 2nm Chip Production

Source: Date:

Qualcomm's CEO, Cristiano Amon, has revealed that the company is in discussions with Samsung regarding the production of its 2nm chips, although Samsung has chosen not to comment on these talks.

This development is noteworthy, especially considering that Samsung's foundry has faced challenges recently. The last collaboration between Samsung and Qualcomm for chip production was in 2022 with the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. However, this chip garnered criticism for thermal issues, and Samsung's foundry did not meet Qualcomm's yield requirements, prompting Qualcomm to partner with TSMC instead.

Currently, Qualcomm has initiated discussions with Samsung to potentially handle the manufacturing of its 2nm chips. Sources indicate that Qualcomm has completed the chip design and is prepared to commence production.

While no agreements have been finalized, it seems that Samsung is working to revitalize its foundry business. The head of Samsung's chip division is focused on restoring profitability, and recent supply agreements have shown promise. Notably, Tesla has entered a deal with Samsung to produce high-end chips for AI applications.

It remains uncertain whether Samsung will produce the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips or if the discussions involve other projects.
