Avatr, a premium automotive brand formed by a consortium of Chinese industrial giants, has unveiled the updated Avatr 12. This collaboration includes leading players such as battery manufacturer CATL, automotive giant Changan, and tech innovator Huawei. The company recently submitted images and specifications of the refreshed model to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) for approval, revealing exciting developments for this sleek vehicle. The major highlight is its power—plenty of it.
The updated Avatr 12, first introduced in 2023, now features a formidable battery version equipped with three motors. In addition, it introduces a new model that utilizes a gasoline engine to assist in charging the battery, indicating Avatr's strategy to attract more buyers in China's competitive market. These new variants are priced between RMB 300,000 and RMB 320,000, approximately $42,900 to $45,700. It may not be a bargain, but considering the features, the price appears quite compelling.

The new Avatr 12 will offer a Tri-Motor All-Wheel Drive variant. This configuration includes one motor at the front and two at the rear, with the front motor delivering 210 kW (281 hp) and each of the two rear motors producing 251 kW (337 hp). Overall, the system generates an astonishing 712 kW, equivalent to 955 horsepower. This impressive output positions the Avatr 12 alongside many supercars, making it an extraordinary option for everyday driving.

Recognizing that not all consumers are ready to transition fully to electric vehicles, Avatr is simultaneously launching an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) variant. This version operates primarily on electricity but features a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that acts as a generator to recharge the battery when needed. The gas engine specifically generates 115 kW for charging purposes.
The EREV model transmits power to the rear wheels and utilizes a dual-motor setup for the rear, similar to the high-performance variant, with each motor producing 200 kW (268 hp). A 52 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from CATL stores energy, allowing this version to travel approximately 162 miles based on WLTC standards on battery power alone.

For those preferring a fully electric experience, the standard battery electric variants remain available. In addition to the powerful tri-motor model, a Dual-Motor Rear-Wheel Drive option offers a similar rear motor configuration with 251 kW (337 hp) per wheel. An output of 674 horsepower ensures it delivers significant power for daily use. Avatr appears to be moving away from single-motor configurations with this update, emphasizing performance instead.
The design of the Avatr 12 largely retains its appealing aesthetic, featuring a stylish "fastback" silhouette that resembles a blend of a sedan and an SUV. Its dimensions include a length of 197.6 inches, a width of 78.7 inches, and a height of 57.9 inches, with a spacious wheelbase of 118.9 inches, providing ample legroom.

A significant upgrade in the new model is the enhanced LiDAR system mounted on the roof, enabling advanced self-driving capabilities by allowing the vehicle to perceive its surroundings. This system likely incorporates Huawei's latest technology. Additionally, Avatr has installed two extra LiDAR sensors on the front fenders.
The rear design features one of its most unusual elements, reminiscent of the Polestar 4: the absence of rear cabin glass. Drivers must rely on cameras for visibility, a futuristic approach that may require some time to adapt. The car's sporty profile is completed with a retractable spoiler that deploys when speed increases, along with sleek single-strip taillights that enhance its modern look.
