Qualcomm Explores Partnership with Samsung for 2nm Chip Production

Source: Date:

Qualcomm's CEO, Cristiano Amon, has indicated that the company is in discussions with Samsung regarding the production of its 2nm chips. Samsung, however, has not commented on these talks.

This development is noteworthy, especially considering Samsung's foundry business has faced challenges recently. The last collaboration between Samsung and Qualcomm occurred in 2022 for the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1; however, it was criticized for thermal issues. Furthermore, Samsung's foundry struggled to meet Qualcomm's yield requirements, prompting Qualcomm to partner with TSMC instead.

Current discussions suggest that Qualcomm has completed its chip design and is ready to commence production of the 2nm chips with Samsung, although no agreements have been finalized.

Samsung's chip division head is now focused on revitalizing its foundry business, and recent supply agreements have shown promise. For example, Tesla recently partnered with Samsung for producing advanced chips intended for AI applications.

It remains to be seen if Samsung will manufacture the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips or if both companies have different plans in mind.
