Xiaomi is placing significant emphasis on Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology. These vehicles remain electric but integrate a small gasoline engine that functions solely as a generator. This engine does not drive the wheels directly; instead, it generates electricity to keep the battery charged while driving. Understanding that some consumers prefer the reassurance of a gas tank, Xiaomi has been recruiting numerous experts in this field since 2023 to ensure that its 'large-battery hybrids' can compete with leading Chinese manufacturers.
The standout model set to launch in 2026 is a spacious 7-seater SUV, currently known by its code name 'Kunlun.' This large vehicle is designed for families needing ample space and is expected to debut in the first half of 2026. Recently, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun led a team to Xinjiang for high-temperature testing, where the camouflaged SUV spotted during the trip featured an exhaust pipe, affirming Xiaomi's dedication to utilizing gasoline engines to extend the range of its electric vehicles.
The Kunlun SUV will compete directly with models like the Li Auto L9. It will be equipped with a sizable battery boasting a capacity exceeding 70 kWh, enabling it to travel between 249 miles and 311 miles on electric power alone.
