According to an official support page published in Hindi, Google is introducing a new feature that will allow users to change the email address associated with their Google account. However, this feature will roll out gradually, so it may not be immediately available to all users.
The process permits users to add a new email alias to their existing Google account once every 12 months. While this is described as changing the email address, the original email remains active and is not deleted. Users will continue to have a single inbox and outbox, but will likely be able to filter incoming messages based on the address they were sent to and select which email alias to use for outgoing messages.
In essence, Google will enable users to associate up to three new email addresses with an existing account, maintaining all existing data and services. It remains unclear whether users will be able to merge separate Google accounts into one with this feature.
This development is particularly noteworthy given that many users manage multiple Google accounts, often for different email channels. While Gmail has never officially supported managing multiple accounts under one umbrella, it does offer server-side email filtering and conditional forwarding, albeit through less obvious settings. This new capability could enhance complex email setups and has potential implications for managed Google accounts, such as those used on school Chromebooks.
There are some limitations, including a cap of three new email aliases added at one-year intervals, allowing for a total of four email addresses per account. Importantly, once added, these addresses cannot be deleted. It is also uncertain whether this feature will be available for Google Workspace accounts that use custom email domains rather than @google.com addresses. Several details about the feature's scope and functionality have yet to be clarified.
