The European Union was the first to push Apple to open its tightly controlled ecosystem, and several countries worldwide have since followed suit. The latest development comes from Brazil, where Apple has agreed to let iPhone users download and purchase apps and digital services outside of the App Store.

Apple reached an agreement with Brazil's Administrative Council for Economic Defense, which had been investigating the company regarding this issue. The Council has approved Apple's proposed remedies, giving the company 105 days to implement changes that allow new payment options for apps and services on iOS within Brazil.

This binding agreement will last three years. Under its terms, Apple will permit developers to accept payments outside of the App Store and enable the use of third-party app stores on iOS devices in Brazil. The investigation by Brazilian authorities began in December 2022, making this resolution the result of an extensive process.
