Rivian has released software update version 2025.46, introducing significant improvements to its R1S and R1T electric vehicles. The standout feature is Universal Hands-Free driving, expanding the vehicle’s self-steering capabilities to over 5.6 million kilometers of roads across the U.S. and Canada, up from the previous limit of approximately 217,260 km on select highways.
For second-generation Rivian owners, this update enables hands-free assistance on nearly any road with visible lane markings. However, it is important to note that these vehicles are not fully autonomous; drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control, as the system cannot independently stop at traffic signals or stop signs. To enhance user experience, Rivian introduced "Drive Styles," allowing drivers to choose between "Mild" for a relaxed drive with more space, "Medium" for balanced driving behavior, or "Spicy" for a more assertive approach with closer following distances and quicker lane changes.
Rivian also addressed key management with the introduction of a Digital Key for second-generation models. Owners can now store their car keys in digital wallets on compatible devices such as iPhones, Apple Watches, Samsung, and Google Pixel phones. This feature eliminates the need for a physical key fob and allows users to share access digitally with friends or family, enhancing convenience for busy households.
The update also enhances the driver’s display options. Newer Rivian models now offer easy switching between a map view and an "Autonomy" mode, which visually represents surrounding vehicles and lanes in 3D. Older models can toggle between a navigation map and a front-view display using the control wheel on the right side of the steering wheel.
Off-road enthusiasts with Quad-Motor models gain the "Kick Turn" feature, designed for tight maneuvering in challenging terrain. When driving under 24 km/h, the vehicle can rotate its wheels in opposite directions, allowing sharp turns by slowing or reversing the wheels on the vehicle’s inside track.
Lastly, the update introduces the RAD Tuner, a customizable interface that lets drivers adjust acceleration and power distribution between front and rear wheels via on-screen sliders. Settings can be saved for different terrains, such as sand or snow, enhancing the vehicle’s adaptability to varying driving conditions.
