The iconic Volkswagen bus once symbolized affordable travel and freedom. When Volkswagen revealed the ID. Buzz, anticipation grew for a modern electric version of this classic. However, Volkswagen has now confirmed it will not offer the ID. Buzz in the US market for the 2026 model year.
The situation escalated when some dealers mistakenly informed customers that the ID. Buzz was being discontinued entirely, claiming current stock was the last chance to purchase the vehicle. In response, Volkswagen clarified this was not the case. A company spokesperson explained that skipping the 2026 model year is a strategic decision driven by current market conditions.

Pricing is a significant hurdle for the ID. Buzz. While the original VW bus was lauded for its simplicity and affordability, the electric ID. Buzz carries a much higher price point. In the US, the starting price approaches $60,000, rising to nearly $70,000 for premium trims—although still comparatively lower than in Europe. This makes it challenging for many families to justify choosing the ID. Buzz over alternative electric vehicles, as the cost exceeds most budgets.
Volkswagen remains optimistic about the ID. Buzz’s future, viewing it as an important “halo” product that highlights the brand’s innovation. Rather than producing new 2026 models, the company is encouraging dealers to focus on selling existing 2025 inventory during this transitional phase. Volkswagen aims to clear stock before potentially reintroducing the model in 2027.

Despite growing consumer interest in electric vehicles, high prices and evolving government regulations are creating uncertainty among buyers. For the ID. Buzz to succeed long-term, experts say Volkswagen may need to adjust its strategy—potentially by lowering prices or adding more features to justify the cost. If the 2027 model does arrive, it must prove it is more than a nostalgic collectible for affluent buyers.
Currently, the 2025 ID. Buzz remains available, but with no new models until at least 2027, the vehicle’s presence in the US will be limited. Volkswagen is essentially pausing production to await better market conditions. Whether the electric bus becomes a lasting presence on American roads remains uncertain; for now, it appears to be a tentative experiment.
