Rivian has released its new software update, version 2025.46, introducing significant improvements to the R1S and R1T electric vehicle models. The standout feature, Universal Hands-Free driving, now enables the cars to autonomously steer on a far wider range of roads. Previously limited to approximately 217,260 km of select highways, this capability has expanded to cover more than 5.6 km of roads throughout the United States and Canada.

Owners of second-generation Rivian vehicles can now rely on the updated software to assist with driving on nearly any road featuring clear lane markings. It should be noted that these features do not constitute full autonomous driving; the vehicle cannot independently stop at red lights or stop signs. Drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control at all times. To enhance personalization, Rivian introduced "Drive Styles," allowing users to select the vehicle’s driving behavior when assistance is active. Options include "Mild" for a relaxed ride with ample space, "Medium" for a balanced experience, and "Spicy" for a more assertive style, with closer following distances and quicker lane changes.
Key management also becomes easier with the introduction of a Digital Key for second-generation models. Users can store their vehicle key in a digital wallet on an iPhone, Apple Watch, Samsung, or Google Pixel device, eliminating the need to carry a physical key fob. The digital key can also be shared with friends or family members for temporary access, adding convenience for busy households.

The update also refines the cockpit display. Drivers can now effortlessly switch between multiple views on the screen behind the steering wheel. Newer Rivian models offer navigation maps and a specialized "Autonomy" 3D view that highlights surrounding vehicles and lane positioning. For older models, the display toggles between a navigation map and a forward-object view via a small wheel control located on the right side of the steering wheel.
Off-road enthusiasts with Quad-Motor models gain the new "Kick Turn" feature, designed for tight maneuvers in challenging terrain such as mud or dirt. When driving below 24 km/h, the vehicle can rotate its wheels in opposite directions, enabling tight pivot turns by slowing or reversing the inner wheels during execution.
Lastly, the update introduces the RAD Tuner, a customizable interface that allows drivers to adjust performance settings on their R1T or R1S. Using touchscreen sliders, users can modify acceleration rates and power distribution between front and rear wheels. These preferences can be saved for various surfaces like sand or snow, enhancing the vehicle’s adaptability.
