OpenAI has introduced the GPT-5.1 update, enhancing the conversational experience with new personalization features and improved response modes. Building upon the original GPT-5 launch earlier this year, the latest iteration includes two distinct modes: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking. Instant mode offers a more engaging, intelligent interaction that closely follows user instructions, while Thinking mode delivers clearer explanations, quicker responses for straightforward queries, and greater persistence when tackling complex problems.
In addition to these modes, OpenAI is empowering users to customize ChatGPT’s tone directly through the settings panel. Users can now choose from eight different tone presets to tailor conversations to their preferences or needs. The options include Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical, providing a wide range of conversational styles for diverse contexts.
The new GPT-5.1 Instant and Thinking modes are currently available to Pro, Plus, Go, and Business users, with free tier access expected to roll out soon. This update is positioned to become the default experience for all GPT interactions, promising smarter and more personalized AI conversations.
