A new feature in Gmail has been introduced where Gemini will now automatically summarize emails for users. This functionality will be turned on by default and will provide summaries at the top of email content for messages that could benefit from a summary, such as longer email threads or messages with multiple replies.
Gemini will extract key points from the email thread and continuously update the summary to include information from any subsequent replies. Previously, users had to manually tap "Summarize this email" to access this feature, but now it will be generated automatically.
This feature is currently only available for emails in English. If an email is not identified by Gemini as needing a summary, users can still prompt a summary by selecting the "Summarize this email" option.
Rollout of this feature is expected to take up to 15 days and will only be accessible to Google Workspace subscribers, Google One AI Premium subscribers, and customers with Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium.
