HMD and Lava team up to revolutionize smartphones with broadcast TV support

Major smartphone manufacturers HMD and Lava have joined forces to bring a groundbreaking feature to their upcoming devices - broadcast TV support. This innovative technology, known as Direct-to-Mobile (D2M), will allow users to access TV channels without requiring an internet or Wi-Fi connection. The new smartphones will be unveiled at the highly anticipated World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, set to take place in Mumbai, India.

Both the Lava and HMD phones will be equipped with an ultra-high-frequency (UHF) antenna that can receive terrestrial TV broadcasts, thanks to a dedicated SL3000 chip provided by Saankhya Labs. The collaboration between Lava and Tejas Networks has led to a device powered by a MediaTek MT6261 chip, with a 2,200 mAh battery and a 2.8” screen. Despite the small screen size, the promise of watching TV on the go without the need for a data connection is an enticing proposition.
